How to report an auto insurance claim

What should I do if I have an auto accident?

 

1. Do not leave the scene of the car accident.

• Call the police immediately to report any automobile accident, no matter how small, that results in personal injury or vehicle damage.
• Notify the police about any medical assistance that may be needed or any vehicle that is not drivable.
• Warn other vehicles by turning on your vehicle's flashers.
• Do not accept responsibility or otherwise discuss the car accident with anyone except police authorities and your auto insurance company. Do not accept any monetary settlement at the car accident scene.
• Remain calm and courteous.

2. Exchange information with the other driver.

• Write down the other driver's license number, license plate number and state.
• Get the other driver’s auto insurance company name and policy number. Look at the insurance I.D. card carefully be certain you have the correct name of the insurance company.
• Write down the year, make, model, and description of the vehicle. Record the name, address and telephone number of the other driver.
• Write down the names and addresses of all passengers, injured persons or anyone with property damage.
• Get names and contact information from at least two witnesses to the car accident if possible.

3. Diagram the scene before leaving the scene of automobile accident .

• Note time of day, weather and condition of roadway (wet, icy, dry).
• Show positions of all vehicles involved in the auto accident.
• Write down the car accident details you feel are important.
• After taking care of everything at the scene, notify your auto insurance company immediately. Save copies of all paperwork relating to the car accident.
